Northeast India is about to get its first international marathon, and it's arriving with the ambition to match the region it represents.

The Guwahati International Marathon will take place on 7 February 2027, bringing together elite athletes, amateur runners, and first-time participants along a route that traces the Brahmaputra through the heart of the city. Starting near Sankat Mochan and Sewashram, Amingaon, runners will pass Maa Kamakhya Temple before finishing at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, covering 42.4 kilometres past some of Guwahati's most iconic landmarks.

Five categories, one city

Whether you're chasing a personal best or joining for the experience, there's a distance for you: the Full Marathon (42 km), Half Marathon (21 km), 10K Run, Kaziranga Run (5 km), and Joy Daur (3 km).

A world-class field

The marathon has already drawn international attention, with an elite field featuring top-50 ranked runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Uganda, Rwanda, Belgium, Germany, and the United Kingdom, competing alongside India's top 20 marathoners for ₹1.25 crore in prize money and a dedicated bonus for breaking the Indian course record. The event is certified by the World Athletics Foundation and the Athletics Federation of India, with Race Director Richard Hunter and Course Measurer Kim Vivian overseeing operations to international standard.

Backed by names Assam knows

The marathon carries the patronage of Hon'ble Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, with Sunil Gavaskar as Commissioner, and PV Sindhu and John Abraham as ambassadors. Marathon legend Haile Gebrselassie joins the elite field lineup.

More than a race

In partnership with India Cares Foundation, the marathon also becomes a platform for social impact, connecting runners and corporates with causes across education, environment, and community welfare.

This is the first chapter of what organizers hope becomes Northeast India's flagship annual sporting event; not just a race through Guwahati, but an invitation to discover everything the region has to offer.
